Windsong’s newest jack-of-all-trades, Joe Ellis, has been with us for three months, and we asked him to reflect on the journey so far.

When my friends and family ask me about my job at Windsong, I sum it up by telling them that I won the employment lottery. On my first day, they handed me a laptop. On the second day they gave me a key to the building (all of the keys, actually) and an alarm code. On the third day they asked me if I wanted ‘Joe’ or ‘Joseph’ on my company credit card. And it just kept getting better.

Byron, upon learning of my many and varied skills of a mechanical nature, began showing me around the building, outlining projects that were on the to-do list. Each time he shared his ideas or plans, I responded with a “No problem, I can do that.” I believe that there was even a time or two that I clapped my hands and squealed like a little girl getting a pony for her birthday… though it’s possible that was only in my head.

The mission of Windsong is creating, not building maintenance and organization, so my addition to the team seem as if it was written in the stars. I don’t mean to get sentimental, but how else to describe it? I’ve been collecting my skills and talents for years, and had begun to believe that I would never find a job in which I could use most, if not all, of them. And then, one boring afternoon, I decided to read every… single… job posting on Indeed, and the rest is history.

Have I made a few missteps? Sure. Have I been welcomed into the family-like atmosphere with open arms? Most definitely. Best of all, I can honestly say that this is the first job I have ever had where I was actually bummed when the workday was over. But so far they have let me keep coming back the next day, so I guess I’m doing something right?

During my second interview, I made a comment to the effect that I would be the oil in the machine that is Windsong Productions if I were hired. Each day, I feel like I find a new way to make things run a little more smoothly, whether improving a process that used to be frustrating at best, maddening at worst, or just fixing something that needed fixing.

Oh, and one more thing that I’m going to make happen. That slide that has been mentioned before on this blog? I’m the guy who’s going to install it. Just as soon as I can get Sara to OK the purchase order.
